Queer Chinese photographer Ren Hang committed suicide late last month just before he would have turned 30.
During his short life, he shocked audiences with his frank depictions of sexuality — often queer sexuality.
Sexuality, in his work, often takes on a surreal, eerie quality.
Pornography is illegal in China. Ren frequently ran into trouble with the police.
Ren told Vice, “My photos, especially the ones of naked bodies, are forbidden to be shown in Chinese galleries.”
“I don’t want others having the impression that Chinese people are robots with no cocks or pussies,” he said, quoted in NewNowNext.
Ren made no secret of the fact that he suffered from depression.
Ren Hang jumped out of a building on February 24.
