Robyn announces TEKLA, a new tech festival for young women taking place in Stockholm in April.

After winning Sweden’s prestigious Great Prize in 2013, valued at a cool $140,000 USD, rather than simply walk away with the prize money, Robyn has decided to use the platform to give back to young women and provide them with a unique opportunity for them to engage with technology.

As announced in a press release obtained by Pitchfork yesterday, Robyn will be launching a new one-day tech festival for young women ages 11-18 called TEKLA, to take place at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm on April 18th.

The festival will offer a wide rainbow of workshops designed to introduce attendees to all facets of modern geekery, including programming, robotics, 3D printing, game development, and other computer science and engineering subjects that young women may not have as much access to as they should in a male-dominated industry.

TEKLA is the latest project in a growing partnership between KTH and Robyn, beginning in 2013 when KTH awarded Robyn with the Great Prize, an honor bestowed on one Swedish citizen of note each year whose contribution to society “exerts a powerful influence particularly on the spiritual life of her own people.”

In their award announcement, KTH specifically highlighted Robyn’s embrace of technology in her music, celebrating the fact that she “uses the new technology in IT, audio and video in innovative and exciting ways”.
