RuPaul’s DragCon 2017: The 10 Panels We’re Most Looking Forward To
The third installment of RuPaul’s DragCon is right around the corner, taking place this weekend, April 29-30. More than a convention for drag queens and their fans, this weekend-long event — held in Downtown Los Angeles at the Convention Center — has become the queer response to conventions like SXSW and Comic-Con. To be honest, the people-watching alone is worth the price of admission, but as this convention has increased in size over the years, it features exhibitors hocking their wares (we counted more than 200 this year!), autograph signings and appearances by your favorite queens and gay-favorite celebrities, panel discussions, live web series tapings and more.
Speaking of the panel discussions, with multiple events battling for your attendance throughout the convention center, it can be difficult to create an itinerary! Knowing it’s tough to choose between a Drag Race Season 2 reunion (yes! that’s happening!) and a panel about how the ACLU is protecting LGBTQ rights (also happening!), we’ve decided to whittle down DragCon’s lengthy list of panels to some of our favorites.
Here are the 10 panels we’re most excited for at DragCon 2017:
1. WOW Presents: UNHhhh with Katya & Trixie Mattel Live!
If you’ve never caught an episode of the web series crafted by these two nutjobs, you’re in for a real treat. What better way to witness their unique brand of insanity than live and in person? As their tagline says, it’s the show where Trixie Mattel and Katya talk about whatever they want, because it’s their show, not yours. The conversation may lean shallow, but it’s hilarious! Saturday, 11 a.m.
2. Fashion Queens
Three queens that fit the bill of “fashion queens” from past seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race — Detox, Milk and Violet Chachki — discuss the future of fashion alongside moderator Drew Elliot of Paper magazine. Saturday, 11 a.m.
3. Hey Qween Live!
Jonny McGovern’s hit web series tapes in front of a live audience at this year’s DragCon. This special episode’s guests include Aja and The Princess, and McGovern is joined by his ever-faithful co-host, Lady Red Couture. Saturday, noon
4. Teen Vogue Presents: What Is Drag In Trump’s America?
It’s no secret that Teen Vogue has emerged as a powerful platform of resistance in the Trump era, and at DragCon the mag presents some real talk with this discussion about the challenges and opportunities that arise with doing drag in our nation’s current political climate. Alaska, Bob the Drag Queen and Eureka will be sharing personal stories and contemplating the future. Saturday, 1 p.m.
5. May I Be Graphic?
The most talented queer writers and illustrators working in comic books today get together to share some secrets of the trade, including Sina Grace, the guy behind the all-new Iceman series. If that weren’t enough, the hilarious Drew Droege will be moderating the discussion. Saturday, 1 p.m.
6. Ginger Minj Makes Over Jerry O’Connell
You know him as the funny, sexy-as-hell actor from Stand By Me, but now you can watch him get a drag makeover by your favorite Drag Race glamour toad, Ginger Minj. We aren’t sure how she scored the most fun gig of the entire weekend, but we’ll be there to watch! Saturday, 4 p.m.
7. Theater Queens: A Master Class
Alexis Michelle of the current Drag Race season, Deven Green, Ginger Minj, Jinkx Monsoon and Peaches Christ — the beloved mistress of San Francisco drag parody productions — will sit down to discuss the creation and performance of drag theater and sketch comedy. Lyndsey Parker from Yahoo! Music moderates. Saturday, 5 p.m.
8. Meet the Cast of Dragula
Last year The Boulet Brothers — L.A.’s ghoulish party duo with a slew of drag-infused nightlife events under their belt — premiered their own reality competition web series, Dragula: The Search for the World’s First Drag Super Monster to acclaim. Here’s your chance to see the entire cast sit down to tell tales about the no-holds-barred competition. Saturday, 5 p.m.
9. WOW Presents: Alyssa’s Secret Live!
She’s the star of the drag web series to end all drag web series, and she’s back at DragCon to shoot a live version of her hilarious series Alyssa’s Secret. Yes, who knows where Alyssa Edwards (backrolls?!) is gonna take this episode, but if you stick around she’ll treat you to a Q&A session as well. Sunday, 1 p.m.
10. James St. James & Zackary Drucker Interview Alexis Del Lago
James St. James knows an icon or two, and Alexis Del Lago fits the bill. Watch the former club kid (and current editor of the WOW Report) get up close and personal with the drag legend — who is scheduled to present a slideshow of her personal memories — alongside trans artist and Transparent producer Zackary Drucker. Sunday, 1 p.m.
