SXSW 2017: Fest-Goers Got Sneak-Peeks at ‘Annabelle 2,’ ‘It’ and ‘Alien: Covenant’

Be first to like this.

We’re only three days into this year’s SXSW Conference & Festivals, but horror film fans have already been treated to sneak-peaks of the near-future’s most anticipated releases. Annabelle 2 (release date Aug. 11), the remake of Stephen King’s It (release date Sept. 8) and Alien: Covenant (May 19) have already been previewed, the last of which was a total surprise.

It was less than a decade ago, in 2009, when festival-goers who attended a revival screening of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan were actually treated to J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the same film, weeks before the film came to theaters. What a thrill. Those who remember that epic festival moment were perhaps thrilled at the idea it could happen once more, as this year’s opening night film (Friday night) was a screening of Ridley Scott’s original 1979 classic Alien.

Unfortunately fans weren’t treated to that franchise’s latest installment, Alien: Covenant, also directed by Scott, but they got the next best thing: a look at 15 minutes of footage — three different scenes — depicting a few of the film’s most significant and gruesome moments. And best of all, the footage was presented by Scott himself, along with cast members Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride and Michael Fassbender.

For those who don’t mind a few spoilers, head to Flavorwire to get the gist of the three shown excerpts.

Meanwhile, this weekend also saw 20th Century Fox release a new video teaser for Covenant, a haunting piece about the creation of Michael Fassbender’s synthetic humanoid character Walter. Watch it below:

Saturday, at the Austin Convention Center, SXSW staged “Face Your Fears: An Exclusive First Look & Filmmaker Discussion,” featuring Andrés Muschietti (Mama) and David F. Sandberg (Lights Out), here to discuss their respective upcoming horror features, It and Annabelle 2. Both films are due later this year, and the up-and-coming filmmakers shared with fans their personal inspirations and influences. Most exciting, though, they also treated the audience to some first-look footage. The panel was moderated by Senior Editor of Rotten Tomatoes Grae Drake.

It’s been 27 years since Tim Curry portrayed Pennywise, your favorite child-eating alien/clown entity, in the TV movie version of It. The upcoming remake, set to air on USA and starring Bill Skarsgard — yep, the brother of True Blood hunk Alexander — looks just as terrifying, if not more so.

In the teaser trailer shown during Saturday’s panel, the audience got little more than quick splices of the new Pennywise character, one of which had him in his sewer home. Head here for a synopsis of the entire teaser (spoilers ahead, naturally). Fans couldn’t have been more excited for the first look into what will most likely become a two-part project.

Two scenes from the upcoming Anabelle 2 — the latest film in the Conjuring franchise — were shown to the audience, including the film’s opening scene involving a young girl coming into contact with the creepy-as-hell doll for the first time. Both scenes left the audience screaming and excited for more. Again, head here for a full synopsis of the scenes (more spoilers ahead).

We’re only on Day 3 here at the SXSW Conference & Festivals, and we’ve already been treated to sneak-peeks of three of this year’s most anticipated horror releases. There’s plenty more to come, so check back daily for SXSW updates.
