The United States of America touts itself as a land of opportunity and a cultural melting pot, but the USA has a long history of anti-LGBTQ discrimination. While the Supreme Court legalized marriage equality in June 2015, many states in America still allow employers to fire someone for being LGBTQ and parents to send their LGBTQ children to harmful “conversion therapy”.

Nevertheless, the USA news isn’t all bad. Though many US states could do more to protect LGBTQ people, many state and federal judges, city governments and businesses have begun pursuing policies to protect LGBTQ rights. Plus, American media has generally incorporated more LGBTQ characters into TV, film and even video games — media that ends up being distributed worldwide. But US media still has a long way to go for true inclusivity, especially for women, bisexual and transgender people, people with disabilities, Black people and other people of color.
