Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to commemorate the trans people whose lives have been lost over the last year. This has been one of the deadliest years on record for trans people with 25 known deaths so far. Let’s take a moment to remember these people and their passing.


1. Mesha Caldwell, Jan. 4

Mesha Caldwell was found shot to death on Jan. 4 outside of Canton, Mississippi, city limits. She was a hair and makeup artist.

Caldwell’s friend and former roommate Evonne Kaho described her: “She was always happy and she was always smiling and she always had something good to say to everyone.”

2. Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow, Jan. 6

Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow’s body was found after her neighbor complained of a strong odor coming from her apartment.

She was a member of the Sioux Falls Two-Spirit and Allies. She was 28 years old.

3. Sean Ryan Hake, Jan. 6

Police killed Sean Ryan Hake, a 23-year-old trans man, after he allegedly threatened them with a knife. The police had come to Ryan’s parents home after he threatened to kill his mom. His mom later filed a lawsuit calling the police’s action an excessive use of force.

4. JoJo Striker, Feb. 8

Police found JoJo Striker’s body in a garage in Toledo, Ohio. She was killed by gunshot.

Striker was a trans rights activist. She was 23.

5. Jaquarrius Holland, Feb. 19

Jaquarrius Holland was shot to death during a verbal altercation. She lived in Monroe, Louisiana. She loved makeup, hairstyling and R&B music. She was only 18.


6. Tiara Richmond, Feb. 21

Tiara Richmond was shot to death in Chicago by a man she was riding with in a car. Richmond also went by the name Keke Collier. She was 24.


7. Demarkis Stansberry, Feb. 25

Demarkis Stansberry, a trans man from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was shot in the head by acquaintance Nicholas Matthews. Matthews claimed the shooting was an accident.

According to his Facebook profile, Stansberry worked for a record company and owned a two-year-old pitbull named Rayne, which he referred to as “my baby.”


8. Chyna Doll Dupree, Feb. 25

Chyna Doll Dupree was shot outside a shopping center in New Orleans. She was a performer who played in shows across the country. Dupree was in town to visit her friends and family for Mardi Gras.

8. Ciara McElveen, Feb. 27

Ciara McElveen was stabbed to death on February 27 in New Orleans, just two days after Chyna Doll Dupree. McElveen was 21 years old.


9. Alphonza Watson, March 22

Police discovered Watson at 4:15 a.m. in Baltimore, Maryland with a lethal gunshot wound to her stomach. She went by the nickname “Peaches,” talked often about “the Lord” and worked as a salesperson at an upscale retailer, according to her mother. She was 38.


10. Kenne McFadden, April 9

McFadden loved to sing and perform karaoke. She was murdered by an acquaintance who pushed her body into San Antonio’s famed River Walk. She was 26.


11. Chayviss Reed, April 21

Chayviss Reed was fatally shot on a Miami street just before 5 a.m.. She enjoyed dancing and was known amongst her friends as “Juicy.” She was 28 years old.


12. Kenneth Bostick, May 4

Kenneth died as a result of a head injury he sustained when attacked  outside of a Five Guys burger restaurant in the Chelsea area of New York City. He was 59.


13. Sherrell Faulkner, May 16

On Nov. 30, 2016, police found Faulkner’s severely beaten body beside a dumpster near the so-called LGBTQ-friendly area of Charlotte, North Carolina. She was 46 years old.


14.Kendra Marie Adams, June 13

Adams used to perform under the drag name Kimbrella Rosé with the House of Merlot. Her burned body was discovered at a construction site near Ithaca, New York. She was 28.


15. Ava Le’Ray Barrin, June 25

Barrin was reportedly a girl who loved to make people laugh. She was shot to death by another trans woman in the parking lot of her Athens, Georgia apartment complex. She was 17.


16. Ebony Morgan, July 2

Police found Morgan’s bullet-riddled body in Lynchburg, Virginia. Police are unsure if she was killed if her homicide was a hate crime. She was 28.


17. TeeTee Dangerfield, Aug. 1

The 32-year-old restaurant server was found shot to death in her car in Atlanta, Georgia. She was reportedly a rising leader for union workers and had recently purchased a home. She was 32 years old.


18. Gwynevere River Song, Aug. 12

The self-described bisexual “femandrogyne” was shot to death in their Waxahachie, Texas home during a domestic dispute. They were 26 years old.


19. Kiwi Herring, Aug. 12

Police in St. Louis, Missouri shot Herring, a mother of three, dead after Herring slashed a police officer’s arm with a knife. She was 30.


20. Kashmire Redd, Sept. 4

Police say that Redd’s romantic partner stabbed him to death inside of his Gates, New York home. He died later that day. He was 28 years old.


21. Derricka Banner, Sept. 12

Banner (who was went by Ms. Bow Wow) was shot to death in her car around 3 a.m. by an 18-year-old male assailant who was also a previous sexual partner. She was 26.


22. Ally Steinfeld, Sept. 14

Described as a loving, outgoing and peaceful person, Steinfeld’s murderers gouged out her eyes, stabbed her in the genitals, set her body on fire and left her corpse to rot in a chicken coop. She was 17 years old.


23. Scout Schultz, Sept. 16

Schlutz, an LGBTQ student activist was shot dead by police on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology after reportedly suffering a mental breakdown and stalking around campus with a knife. They identified as non-binary and intersex. They were 21.


24. Stephanie Montez, Sept. 28

The occasional drag performer who loved to dance was found shot to death on a roadside in Robstown, Texas. She was 47.


25. Candace Towns, Oct. 31

“If I needed anything she would give it to me. She would give me the clothes off her back,” said a friend of Candace Towns. Police found her body in a rundown part of Macon, Georgia. She was 30 years old.
