Caitlyn Jenner Is Shocked (Shocked, We Tell You) That Trump Is So Anti-LGBTQ

Unless you were unconscious or heavily intoxicated last week (and who could blame you?), then you probably witnessed U.S. President Donald Trump running roughshod over LGBTQ rights with his announcements that it’s totally okay to fire trans people and discriminate against LGBTQ people as long as you do it for religious reasons. Well, guess who is surprised that Trump has turned out to be so horrible on LGBTQ rights? Trans Trump supporter Caitlyn Jenner.

Taking advantage of Twitter’s newly expanded 280-character limit, Jenner recently issued a tweet that read:

Trump administration’s latest in a string of attacks on trans people: trans students, trans service members, & now employment protections for trans workers. This systematic gutting of non-discrimination protections for trans people is a disgrace!

Jenner’s tweet tagged U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions (head of the Department of Justice) and Trump.

Jenner’s much-publicized decision to vote Republican during the 2016 election got her immediate pushback. She’s actually on record as having glowing things to say about Donald Trump, even praising him for his outreach to women and LGBTQs. But that hasn’t turned out so great, and other Twitter users immediately began lambasting Jenner’s recent tweet for only now realizing Trump’s awfulness:

Some people defended Jenner by stating that Trump promised, during the campaign, to stand up for LGBTQ rights. But that’s both inaccurate and misleading.

During the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, Trump said, “I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of the hateful, foreign ideology, believe me.” But the foreign ideology he referred to was Islam (a religion which, unlike Christianity, is not inherently anti-gay).

Meanwhile, Trump went on to install the most anti-LGBTQ cabinet in history and has since spent much energy continually rolling back LGBTQ rights granted during Barack Obama’s presidency, including rescinding trans students’ bathroom access and banning trans people from the military.

Although Jenner vocally opposed Trump’s military ban, she defended Trump’s actions as president on television in July and wore his trademark “Make America Great Again” hat as recently as August (though she claims to have worn it by accident).
