A digital economy bill currently going through the United Kingdom parliament has a provision blocking any websites “portraying a range of nonconventional sexual acts”. Even though the bill does not explicitly list these acts, The Guardian says that porn involving spanking, whipping or caning that leaves marks, and sex acts involving urination, female ejaculation or menstruation as well as sex in public are likely to be caught by the ban.” The ban would also include porn that violates the so-called “four-finger rule” against fisting.

A spokeswoman for MindGeek, one of the world’s biggest pornographic website operators, said that many of the prohibited sexual activities “are normalised and accepted aspects of healthy sexuality, and are proudly celebrated by the feminist, queer and ethical porn movements internationally.” Damn right. It would also negatively affect businesses who show these sorts of porn in other countries all around the world when there’s nothing illegal about the acts themselves.

The prohibited sex acts have reportedly gotten little discussion during the bill’s committee hearing, but the entire bill is being sold as a way to “protect minors.” WON’T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN??!?! Professor Clare McGlynn, “an expert on pornography laws at Durham University and co-founder of the Centre for Gender Equal Media”, says that the law would distract from the more pressing issues of child sex abuse and sexual violence.
