VIDEO: Columbine Survivor Calls Out Rick Santorum For Kim Davis Comparison

In the CNN GOP Debates, Rick Santorum invoked the story of Cassie Bernall, one of the victims of the Columbine shootings, to explain why he wouldn’t have fired Kim Davis:

In the video, he says Cassie Bernall was praised as a hero for her expression of faith in the face of death, where Kim Davis has been shamed as a villain for her expression of faith in the face of jail time. Not only is Santorum’s analogy tortured at best, it’s based on a factual error. Despite the urban legend that Bernall was discovered beneath a library table by the gunmen, was asked if she believed in God and was shot when she said “Yes”, this never happened. Instead, Bernall silently prayed as she was murdered; the question was asked, however, to Valeen Schnurr, who thankfully survived when she was shot after answering “yes”.

To us, Santorum’s speech just sounded like standard far-right, pseudo-Christian gibberish. But to Amanda Stair-Duran, it was deeply offensive. And Stair-Duran was there that day, at Columbine. In the library where Bernall was. And she’s demanding an apology from Santorum.

In the video, a visibly upset Stair-Duran calls Santorum out for not only repeating a myth, but for minimizing their tragedy in the service of bigotry. In her words:

Ms. Davis never had to hide under a table while everyone got shot around her. She never has been held at gunpoint at any point in her life… As a library survivor myself, you don’t want to experience the feeling of having everyone ten feet around you being shot. It’s a downright terrifying sensation, and the fact she’s being compared to somebody who was killed in the library — who isn’t even alive to tell her side of the story — it’s just degrading to all of us who survived, all of us who were there.

Stair-Duran has also sent a Facebook message to Santorum’s campaign directly asking for an apology, but has yet to receive a response.
