Summer is almost over, and we still don’t have a solid summer jam for 2015. Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” will almost certainly be declared “song of the summer” by Billboard, but that song’s melancholic sentimentality feels more appropriate for Fall.
Maroon 5 tried to deliver, but fell flat, with “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt Like a Motherfucker.” And while Demi Lovato is making a last second run with “Cool For the Summer,” her song might end up sound-tracking Homecoming dances instead of late-August beach parties. So, with no solid summer jams this year, let’s celebrate a song that should’ve been massive this summer: Step forward, “Peanut Butter Jelly” by Galantis.
Galantis are a fusion of two separate Swedish production teams whose combined credits include Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” Kylie Minogue’s “Speakerphone,” and Icona Pop’s “I Love It.” Combining their powers, they’ve branched out from songwriting and production to form their own EDM group. They struck gold last year with “Runaway (You and I),” which made the US dance chart top 10, but it’s “Peanut Butter Jelly” that should be blasting from your speakers right now.
Eschewing the big-beat sound that’s so popular in EDM right now, “Peanut Butter Jelly” is, instead, a brilliant fusion of soul, funk, nu-rave and disco; it could easily have been a B-side to Prince’s “Raspberry Beret.” Throw in some hand-claps, clarion calls, and strings, and you’ve got yourself a festival-ready dance tune that has already helped the band win over new converts at this summer’s Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas.
While “Peanut Butter Jelly” is not a cover of the Family Guy tune that Brian hilariously performs on the show, it’s refreshingly irreverent vibe is in the same vein. Like Brian’s song, the lyrics are nothing to write home about (key phrases include the repeated mantras of “visualize it” and “do it like I owe you some money”), but the overall fun vibe creates such a rapturously over-the-top and glorious song that it doesn’t matter. In short, it’s the kind of feel-good song you want to throw on at a summer party.
Here it is:
Also, the video is hilarious! Acting as a sort of unholy mashup of Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees” video and Avicii’s “Levels” video, it involves grocery store patrons suddenly getting taken over by the power of dance. Complimenting the ‘70s disco theme of the song, the video features roller skating and gold hot pants, as everybody suddenly becomes an instant dance-floor diva. The whole thing is ridiculous but there’s an inherent joy in watching ordinary people cut loose and dance with wild abandon; it’s the perfect visual to complement the pure magic of the song.
So while 2015 won’t be remembered for its summer jams, Galantis have come to the rescue to deliver us a song that can act as a summer jelly. Hopefully the song spreads into a viral hit; until then, go out and spread the news (like you owe us some money!) that “Peanut Butter Jelly” is an ace tune!
