Watch the Emotional Trailer for the Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds HBO Documentary
We are still grieving over the deaths of mother-daughter duo Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. Both were gay icons in their own right, and they passed away only one day apart from each other. TMZ reports that Fisher was cremated, but a portion of her ashes will be placed in a coffin and buried alongside her mother’s coffin later this week.
You may not be invited to Reynolds’s funeral, but you can still commemorate her life this weekend. On Jan. 7, HBO is memorializing the duo with the premiere of the documentary Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. So get out the box of tissues and make a date with Mom.
Filmed more than a year ago, the documentary chronicles the extraordinary bond between the two women that was often under the spotlight of show business and the shadow of mental illness and drug abuse.
“It’s a love story,” HBO Documentary Films president Sheila Nevins tells Variety. “It’s life with Carrie and Debbie. It’s about both of them trying to stand upright, both having their frailties—age on the one hand and mental illness on the other. It’s a love story about a mother and daughter—they happen to be Carrie and Debbie.”
“I’m my mom’s best friend,” Fisher says in the trailer. “Far more than I would ever want to, I know what my mother feels and wants.”
