This Guy Voguing to Bagpipes Totally Overshadowed a Protest by Westboro Baptist Bigots
Yesterday, four members of the Westboro Baptist Church — that’s right, the “God Hates Fags” nutjobs — protested the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania because the university provides non-gendered bathrooms and allows trans people to use whichever bathroom matches their gender identity. It didn’t go so well.
Not only was their paltry four-person protest completely overwhelmed by hundreds of students who came out to counter-protest with handmade signs and transgender flags, but one student holding rainbow and bisexual flags started fiercely vogueing to an impromptu jam session with a bagpipe and drum player while the crowd cheered and completely ignored the Westboro clan.
But you don’t have to take our word for it…
Witness video of his fierce bagpipe voguing below:
It’s worth mentioning that Vogueing was invented in the early ’90s by New York City black queers as a way to throw shade on white pretensions of glamour and other who thought they were “better than.” As such, the dance above expertly showed up the pretensions of the WBC while also throwing some serious shade at their supposed religious superiority.
As we’ve written before, the Westboro Baptist Church actually does lots of social good, partly because their odious public appearances bring out droves of counter-protestors, demonstrating that many more folks support equality over hate and condemnation.
Their protests have also helped raised money for LGBTQ causes in the past, such as in 2011 when comedienne Lisa Lampanelli pledged to donate $1,000 to the New York-based Gay Men’s Health Crisis for every WBC protestor who demonstrated against her show in Topeka, Kansas.
Anti-LGBTQ religious protestors might want to start re-thinking their strategy of protesting university campuses. Two recent instances have turned into embarrassing viral videos when one lesbian student drowned out a hate pastor with bagpipes (who knew that instrument was so useful?) and another mockingly repeated a pastor’s assertion that “You catch gayness by listening to Elton John!”
