Are you too gay to party at the White House over the holidays? Yep, that’s a thing now, apparently. But whether you’re one of the uninvited White House gays or just a guy looking forward to brunching it up with friends, it’s important that you stay informed with all the important LGBTQ news that broke this week. With our help — and these stories on what’s sure to be the lamest White House holiday party in history, a gay custody case in South Africa and Barbie possibly unveiling some bi tendencies — you won’t be dumb at brunch.
Here are the 5 news stories that’ll keep you looking well-informed at brunch this weekend.
We are lucky to have been invited to the White House for the LGBTQ Proclamations when President Obama made sure our community was acknowledged for Pride month. We’ve also been there for annual holiday celebrations. But this year under the Trump administration, longtime attendees aren’t being invited back. Or at least they haven’t been yet. The clincher? They seem to be too black or too LGBTQ to be invited, even if they are in the White House every day.
Chris Johnson, chief political and White House reporter for The Washington Blade, and April Ryan, White House correspondent and DC bureau chief for American Urban Radio Networks, are two of these seemingly disinvited guests. April has been invited to every White House holiday party for the past 20 years, BTW. This whole thing isn’t surprising, though, as the Trump administration thought it more important to acknowledge June as the Great Outdoors Month while completely ignoring the LGBTQ community entirely.
A court in South Africa has denied a gay couple custody of a child they had with a surrogate. Now, before you get mad at the judge, take a sec to think, “But is it for a good reason?” The couple has been together for many years, but one of them isn’t out yet, and they don’t live together.
Judge Ronel Tolmay declined their petition to the court, saying the closeted relationship could harm the child’s psychological well-being. The judge is known for progressive and LGBTQ-inclusive rulings so we can, on its face, rule out any bias against them for being gay.
Does being closeted keep you from creating an environment that is authentic and truthful? Maybe their new child is the perfect opportunity for them to finally live and love openly.
Instagram is all abuzz after Barbie came out as a marriage equality supporter, sporting a “Love Wins” T-shirt. She’s wearing it with friend Aimee Song to promote a social media partnership with Song and her line of shirts. Good enough for us, but it gets better!
Song and Barbie grabbed some avocado toast and coffee in L.A.’s Silver Lake neighborhood together and posted about it. Hmmmm, will future posts reveal something about their friendship, or are they just amazing supporters of LGBTQ equality? We can all use amazing allies, so thank you to Mattel for being a continued supporter of equality. #LoveWins
4. Literally Saving Lives
Tonight many will gather in Los Angeles for Trevor Project Live! If you’re not familiar with the Trevor Project, they are an organization that quite literally saves lives. As we all prepare for the holiday season and our family gatherings, we have to remember that not everyone has a safe and welcoming home.
Some LGBTQ youth are cast aside or kicked out of their homes because of who they love or how they identify. Many consider taking their own lives. LGBTQ youth are two-thirds more likely to commit suicide than straight youth. The Trevor Project provides 24-hour phone operators to talk or text with those in need of a friendly voice, additional support or guidance.
Trevor needs our support. So while Carol Burnett, Armie Hammer, Wilson Cruz, Tom Ford and many others will be doing their part to raise money to support Trevor tonight, you can do the same by going to thetrevorproject.org and making a donation that can literally help save the lives of LGBTQ people.
5. Our Whackjobs of the Week: Get Your Head Out of Your Ass!
A gay couple better known as “TravelingButts” on Instagram (although their account seems to be gone now) is facing some serious charges and may get their asses thrown in jail for, well, showing their asses in the wrong place: A Buddhist Temple in Thailand.
The two have built up a strong number of followers who like to discover where they end up with their ends out. But this time mooning at the temple may come with a hefty price. The two may be charged with committing indecency in a place of worship, which could come with a long jail sentence. We are all about worshipping nice butts, but did they go too far disrespecting Thai religion and culture? Jail time seems a little hefty to us. What do you think?
