5 Things You Should Know About Trump Communications Director Hope Hicks
Yesterday, The New York Times reported that White House Communications Director Hope Hicks lies occasionally on behalf of U.S. President Donald Trump as part of her official duties.
During testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, Hicks revealed that Trump sometimes instructs her to tell “white lies.” But who is Hope Hicks?
If you’re asking, “Who is Hope Hicks?”, here are 5 things you need to know about her:
1. She’s a former model who worked for Ivanka.
Before venturing into politics, she modeled on a Ralph Lauren campaign and was the teen cover model for the first book of a Gossip Girl offshoot called The It Girl series. She even had a cameo on Guiding Light.
After graduating from Southern Methodist University in 2010, Hicks headed for New York to work at Hiltzik Strategies, a public relations firm. While employed there, Hicks was assigned to work on a project for one of Hiltzik’s clients: the Ivanka Trump brand.
Ivanka was expanding her fashion line and hired Hicks to do PR and modeling for the brand.
2. She had no experience working in politics.
In October of 2014, Donald Trump hired Hicks to work in-house for The Trump Organization — and just three months, he later hired her for a job within his burgeoning campaign. Town & Country described her as “25 at the time and while she was a registered Republican, she had no experience in politics.”
In January 2015, Hicks received a call from Trump to come into his office. “Mr. Trump looked at me and said, ‘I’m thinking about running for president, and you’re going to be my press secretary,’” Hicks told New York magazine. “I think it’s ‘the year of the outsider.’ It helps to have people with outsider perspective.”
3. She is known as Trump’s “Real Daughter.”
In the explosive tell-all Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, author Michael Wolff revealed that White House staffers say that Hicks, plays the role of President Trump’s “real daughter.’
A former Trump campaign official told Town & Country that Hicks “does everything from big important conversations to getting a cup of coffee … or whatever it takes to make [Trump] succeed in the moment. She puts his success above her own.”
This includes steaming Trump’s pants while he was still wearing them — and receiving a scolding when she forgot the iron — according to Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski’s tell-all Let Trump Be Trump.
4. She has been the first person to hear Trump’s tweets.
During the campaign, Hicks performed the task of transcribing Trump’s tweets as he dictated them aloud (before sending them to another staffer to actually tweet), New York magazine reported.
5. She’s had a few relationships within the White House.
The demands of the campaign led to a breakup with Hicks’ boyfriend of six years. Since then, she has been linked to the married Lewandowski during the election. In an excerpt from Fire and Fury, Trump allegedly told Hicks that she was “the best piece of tail [Lewandowski]’ll ever have.”
Earlier this year, Hicks was reportedly dating embattled former top aide Rob Porter who resigned on Feb. 7 amid allegations of abuse from his two ex-wives. Hicks is no longer dating Porter.
Some assume that Omarosa’s comments during Celebrity Big Brother about sexual affairs in the White House were about Hope Hicks. Omarosa said, “There’s somebody in the White House that’s sleeping around with everybody, but she is not me.… I’ve never had to do that.”
