Can my position be triangulated by other users?

The news has reported location privacy issues in some other gay social apps. On some of our competitors, it may be possible for others to calculate your precise location, which can be risky, especially in places where being gay is not accepted or safe.

At Hornet, we recognized this issue early on and built protections to prevent location triangulation. Hornet randomly alters your distance as it is displayed in the app. By doing so, it would be impossible for anyone else to find your exact location. We believe this approach maintains the usefulness of proximity features while protecting your privacy and security.

We also offer you the ability to turn off distance information entirely on their profile. To do so, please follow the steps below.

On the App

  1. Open the Hornet app and go to your Profile.
  2. Tap the (three‑dot) icon in the upper‑right corner.
  3. Tap Settings and then select Privacy.
  4. Set Show Distance off.

On the Web

  1. Go to hornet.com and log in.
  2. In the upper right corner, click your profile picture.
  3. Select My Profile.
  4. Next to your Display Name, click Edit Profile.
  5. Under Profile Visibility, uncheck the Show Distance option to turn it off.
