My photo was rejected, but I see worse photos. Why?

How frustrating it is when you have a photo rejected by us and then see that another user has uploaded a worse one? “Is it personal, Hornet?”, you might wonder.

We totally understand your feelings and apologize for any inconvenience. We’d also like to assure you that it’s not personal as we apply our Photo Guidelines to everyone – even if the photo in question is from a staff member or Community contributor like a Featured User.

Here are the real reasons why you were able to see that photo live on Hornet:

  1. That photo has not been moderated yet. On Hornet, all photos go live immediately and we’re only notified of them afterward. That’s when we’ll review and remove the ones that violate our guidelines. So it’s not that we are allowing those photos – we just haven’t had the chance to moderate them yet. However, if they’re still there after one hour or so, it leads us to the 2nd reason.
  2. That photo was approved in error. We know that it doesn’t sound like a good reason and we sincerely apologize for it. We hope you can understand that we’re just human beings and can make mistakes sometimes – including the approval of a photo that shouldn’t be on Hornet. If that’s the case, please report the photo to us so we can have it in the moderation queue again.
  3. It’s a borderline photo. These are normally the groin area photos. How much skin is too much? We struggle with the same problem. Although we try our best, it’s hard to be 100% consistent and there will always be a degree of subjectivity. If you want us to take a 2nd look at any photo, please report it to us.

When you report someone’s photo, you’re actually sending it back to our moderation team so they can take a 2nd look at it. To report a photo, please follow these instructions:

Unfortunately, the fact that you saw a worse photo on Hornet doesn’t mean that we’ll approve yours. If it does violate our guidelines, we have no other choice but to reject it.

If you don’t know why your photo got rejected, please review our Photo Guidelines and read this article.
