Mike Pence Responds to Adam Rippon’s Scathing Remarks by Lying About His Stance on LGBT Rights
A spokesperson of the Vice President has officially
lied responded to the Adam Rippon Mike Pence comments regarding the VP’s history on conversion therapy. When asked earlier this week, the openly gay figure skater said he would skip the usual meet-and-greet between USA Olympic Athletes and the delegation led by Pence because of the latter’s stance on LGBT issues.
“You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy?” said Rippon. “I’m not buying it.”
In a statement to People, Pence’s press secretary, Alyssa Farah, said that Pence does not and has never supported such therapy. “The accusation is totally false with no basis in fact,” Farah said.
That’s a lie, as many people are pointing to a 2000 statement on Pence’s congressional campaign website where he supported the use of federal funding to treat people “seeking to change their sexual behavior.”
Regardless of just that, Pence’s anti-LGBT history speaks for itself. Over and over again, Pence has voted to prohibit same-sex marriage and permit anti-LGBT discrimination. Pence has also fought to defund programs that help prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS, and instead use that government money to pay for gay conversion therapy.
In her statement, Farrah explained, “The vice president is proud to lead the U.S. delegation to the Olympics and support America’s incredible athletes.”
“Despite these misinformed claims [about conversion therapy], the vice president will be enthusiastically supporting all the U.S. athletes competing next month in Pyeongchang,” Farrah said responding to the Adam Rippon Mike Pence comments.
Rippon says he stands by his initial remarks. “I just don’t think that’s right,” he says, “and I think there are so many people who also don’t think that’s right, and I think right now more than ever I have this window of time to say what I feel and hopefully make a change.”
The skater concludes, “My mom has always taught me to stand up for people who don’t have a voice.”
