Kevin Spacey Comes Out Amid Allegations That He Sexually Propositioned a 14-Year-Old Anthony Rapp
Openly gay 46-year-old actor Anthony Rapp has accused 58-year-old Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey of sexually harassing him in 1986. At the time, Rapp was 14 years old and Spacey was around age 26 — they knew of each other because they were both Broadway actors. In addressing Rapp’s accusations, Spacey came out as gay, but claims not to remember having done what Rapp specifically alleged.
Emboldened by the actresses who’ve recently spoken out about sexual misconduct in Hollywood, the entertainment industry, Rapp says that Spacey invited him over to his apartment for a party and, at the end of the party, carried Rapp into his bed and climbed on top of him to sexually engage him.
Rapp said, “My stomach churns. I still to this day can’t wrap my head around so many aspects of it. It’s just deeply confusing to me.”
Rapp says that as a child actor, his mother let him attend the theatre and parties on his own, something he realizes she’d receive criticism for were she still alive. His night with Spacey and other adults began at a club. Rapp says he was not offered alcohol at any point, but, as the party proceeded to Spacey’s apartment, Rapp found himself bored and started hanging out alone in Spacey’s bedroom until past midnight when most of the other guests had left.
My memory was that I thought, Oh, everybody’s gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home. [Spacey] sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk. [Spacey didn’t anything to him.] He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me. He was trying to seduce me. I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.
Rapp says that he managed to squirm out from under Spacey, went to the bathroom and then promptly left Spacey’s apartment. Rapp never told his mother what had happened.
As it happens, there is even a scene in Precious Sons that calls to mind Rapp’s encounter with Spacey, in which Ed Harris’s character drunkenly mistakes his son (played by Rapp) for someone else, climbs on top of him, and makes a sexual advance. Rapp doesn’t know if Spacey ever saw him in the play, but, he said, “Looking back, I think that on some level my system was kind of weirdly accustomed to the action [of having a man crawl on top of me], because it had been happening in the play.”

Kevin Spacey responded on Twitter:
I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I am beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.
This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are other stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and that starts with examining my own behavior.
