Gay people were made for the theater and vice versa. Where else can gay people play dress up and stand on a stage belting out their favorite show tunes to a room full of strangers? Well, pretty much any gay bar, but it’s just not the same. There’s nothing in the world like performing live theater. It’s flashy, it’s in your face, and it’s brought to you by the hard work and devotion of hundreds of gay people. For many gay people, the theater is where they feel the most at home. The sets, the costumes, the egos, it’s all music to their ears. While it might paint a stereotypical portrait of life as a homosexual, no one can deny how influential the gay community has been when it comes to theatrical life. First-rate musicals such as Cabaret, La Cage aux Folles and Hairspray were some of the first big-ticket entertainment options to portray members of the LGBTQ community. When kids grow up and discover that they’re gay, the theater is one of the few places that they can feel at home. Participating in a high school play either in front of or behind the curtain is like a breath of fresh air for so many gay teens that are just learning to find their way. While not everyone goes on to be an actor of the stage or a stage manager, those precious few years in a high school drama club can make all the difference in the world for a young gay person.
