Fish Dildo Drama: Guillermo del Toro Says the ‘Shape of Water’ Sex Toy Is All Kinds of Wrong
Last Friday we told you about the sex toy based on “the asset” in The Shape of Water. The filmmaker and star of the film have finally spoken out about it — and they’re mad. But not for the reason you might think. Instead, they’re mad the designer got the design of the Shape of Water sex toy wrong.
A Tumblr user named XenoCatArtifacts created a Shape of Water sex toy called the “Jewel of the Amazon” — it’s silicone, glows in the dark, looks like two large melted crayons and has wavy ridges in it. While it doesn’t look like the open-close French doors hand gesture that Sally Hawkins’ mute character makes in the film when asked about fish-man sex, oh well — mermen are mysterious and maybe they have secret wavy penises that defy mere hand gestures.
At an Oscar screening of the film hosted by The Wrap, director Guillermo del Toro and star Doug Jones were asked about the sex toy. Both took it in good humor, even while calling the Shape of Water sex toy wrong. The director said, “I don’t think it’s an accurate representation. It’s some form of fan art … I guess.” He also joked, “I’m sure Dunkirk doesn’t have that problem.”
Jones agreed with his boss, saying:
With a light chuckle, I can tell you it’s not exactly what I’d hoped for. I’ve actually had several real action figures made of my creature roles in the past — all done in good taste. After pouring my heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into this romantic, beautiful, magical role, the last thing I want to be remembered for is a silicone appendage that comes in two sizes.
Luckily, the creator of the fish dick is also taking it in good humor. After all, in a Tumblr post, XenoCatArtifacts just seems amused:
If you want your own, though XenoCatArtifacts is sold out of the initial run, the store promises to make at least 20 more in time for the 2018 Oscars in honor of the film’s 13 nominations.
