Here’s Everything You Need to Know About That Timothée Chalamet Shirt You Saw at the Oscars

Though there was a ton of great fashion at this year’s Oscars — we’re looking at you, Adam Rippon — one of our favorite pieces was James Ivory’s Timothée Chalamet shirt. The custom, one-of-a-kind shirt by Andrew Mania featured the face of the Call Me By Your Name star. It’s appropriate that Ivory wore the shirt because, after all, he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film.

VICE spoke to Andrew Mania about the Timothée Chalamet shirt. He said he was moved to paint the shirts after seeing the film: “The film is so beautiful, and I really wanted that shirt with faces in the final scene so much that I decided to paint my own after having no luck finding it online. Which in turn led to painting one of Elio, too.”

Though he’s posted his work to his Instagram, Andrew Mania isn’t just an insta-artist. He’s had his work put on display in London’s Peter Von Kant Gallery and Paris’ Galerie Valentin to name a few. His work has been described as featuring “idealized males” that “look moodily into the middle distance.”

Mania’s work “smacks of the love-sick teenager obsessively archiving his latest crushes.”

James Ivory first became aware of Andrew Mania and his work when art curator Xavier Salomon sent him a photo of one of Mania’s Timothée Chalamet shirts. Ivory quickly responded that he wanted one. Mania says he “secretly [imagined] him wearing it to the Oscars, and then the next day he messaged to say he wanted one made for the Oscars if he got nominated!”

It’s a relationship of mutual admiration. Andrew Mania says he’d been a fan of Ivory’s films since Room With a View.

If you want your own Timothée Chalamet shirt, you’re in luck. You can commission one of your own by getting in touch with Mania via Instagram. The artist is also planning to make screenprints and T-shirts with his now-famous design.
