Could Mattel Soon Be Offering a Same-Sex Barbie Wedding Set?
When Arizona gay couple Matt Jacobi and Nick Caprio went shopping for the perfect eighth birthday present for their niece Natalie, what they really wanted wasn’t available on the shelves of any toy store. But thanks to these two guys speaking out, a same-sex Barbie wedding set by Mattel may soon be available.
Jacobi and Caprio wanted to get Natalie a gift that would get her excited for the guys’ upcoming wedding. They say that all year she’s been talking about the wedding, for which she’ll be playing the role of flower girl.
They decided on a Barbie wedding set, but with one minor adjustment.
A Barbie wedding set typically comes as you’d expect: one Barbie, one Ken, two flower girls and a cake. But by making a few purchases, the guys were able to craft a custom same-sex Barbie wedding set, which they then gave to Natalie.
Jacobi told Good Morning America, “We have a wonderful, loving and caring Italian family. Everyone is so excited for our big day, especially my two nieces. They have been talking about our wedding all year long and have been raised to understand and only know that love is love!”
After the soon-to-be-grooms (they’re getting married next May) presented the gift to their niece, they snapped a photo of their creation and got the attention of Mattel, the toy company responsible for creating Barbie, and filled them in on what they’d done via an open letter:
Hi @mattel! Happy Holidays.
We had a difficult time finding a same sex wedding set to give to my niece for her 8th birthday. She and her little sister are flower girls in our upcoming May wedding. We thought it would be special to give her something with a little meaning behind it. What a bummer you don’t make one with two grooms. Anyway, we had to get creative and make a couple purchases. I hope our custom gift inspires you to make a #GayWedding set! 🌈
Kindest Regards,
Matt Jacobi (America’s Favorite #Guncle)
