Two of Last Year’s Best Gay Films Are Available to Stream on Hulu Right Now

Be first to like this.

We all know how it goes when you can’t find something to watch. The old joke about cable TV providing “52 channels and there’s nothing on” has been replaced with “5,000,000 movies and nothing I want to watch.” But what if we told you that you could watch two of last year’s best gay movies right now. That’s right, you can watch Beach Rats streaming on Hulu. And after that, Hulu’s got God’s Own Country streaming, too.

Beach Rats, directed by Eliza Hittman, is the story of Frankie, a closeted teen struggling with his identity. Frankie starts to flirt online and cruise for sex in real life, and all the while he’s also starting a relationship with a young woman.

The film is not just outstanding but an interesting exploration of, as Hittman put it, “the fine line between heteronormative bravado and homoeroticism.” Besides that, there’s a lot of nudity in it. But it’s nudity for a cause — Harris Dickinson, who plays Frankie, said he took the role because he wanted to “be part of something that did normalize male nudity.”

God’s Own Country streaming now on Hulu

God’s Own Country is frequently compared to Brokeback Mountain — though, honestly, we far prefer God’s Own Country. (Yes, it’s that good.) The film, director Francis Lee’s feature-length debut, tells the story of two farm hands who begin a relationship. (As Willie Nelson once put it, cowboys are frequently, secretly fond of each other.)

The film tells the story of Johnny, who tends his family farm. When his ailing father decides to hire a migrant laborer to help out — against Johnny’s wishes — the two end up bonding (via sex).

The chemistry between the two leads, Josh O’Connor and Alec Secareanu, is palpable, elevating the film to a true masterpiece. A sexy, sexy, masterpiece.
