Chris Hemsworth is pretty great. Sure, he’s amazing as Thor in the Marvel movies, and we’re not gonna lie and pretend we don’t like looking at him. But as this Chris Hemsworth video from his 2015 appearance on Ellen shows, he’s a great parent, too.
The Chris Hemsworth video opens with him talking about making the 2016 fantasy action film The Huntsman: Winter’s War. During the interview, he talks about how he’d like his 4-year-old daughter to see the film, because it’s about powerful women, played by Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt, in a plot that involves rescuing his character.
He made sure to praise the importance of seeing strong women as role models as a way to show little girls that they can be powerful and change the world, too.
But the conversation soon segues into his three kids — India, the aforementioned little girl, and his (then) 2-year-old twin sons, Sasha and Tristan. In the Chris Hemsworth video, he spoke of the time when India came to him asking for something she didn’t have that Sasha and Tristan did: a penis.
“She came to me the other day, and she’s like, ‘You know, Papa, I want one of those things that Sasha and Tristan have.’ And I’m like, ‘What do you mean?’ She said, ‘You know the things in between their legs that you have.” He tried to explain the difference between the sexes, saying that she’d grow breasts — but she immediately cuts him off with “I don’t want breasts!” clarifying that, indeed, she wants a penis.
To his credit, Hemsworth just replies, “You can be whatever you want.” Though, in this case, it doesn’t sound like India was speaking about her gender identity. But a response like Hemsworth’s makes it obvious that if she were talking about her identity, she’d be accepted with open arms.
Sure, there’s some good-natured joking around in the clip, but the love Hemsworth has for his children is clear throughout.
This Ellen and Chris Hemsworth video is not just an amusing anecdote, but a great instance of leading by example, showing how parents can hear their kids without worry or rejection.
