What Was the Best Film & TV of 2017? America’s LGBTQ Entertainment Critics Weigh In
After some community sniping about the amount of intimacy (or, more precisely, gay sex) portrayed in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, GALECA — the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (of which, full disclosure, I’m a member) — anointed the film with a leading nine nominations for the organization’s ninth annual Dorian Awards.
Along with its Dorian Awards nomination for Film of the Year, Call Me By Your Name scored nominations for Director of the Year (Film or Television), three acting nods — for Timothée Chalamet (Best Performance of the Year, Actor) and Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg (Supporting Film Performance of the Year, Actor) — and a few others. Though, alas, nothing for the peach.
Call Me By Your Name is not alone on the Dorian Awards film front. It’s joined by Guillermo del Toro’s love fantasy The Shape of Water, Jordan Peele’s prescient horror film Get Out, Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age dramedyLady Bird and the French-language ACT UP drama BPM (Beats Per Minute).
GALECA’s take on the awards season includes nominations for television, documentaries and some categories that are uniquely their own, like the Dorian Awards for Campy Film of the Year, Wilde Wit of the Year (honoring a performer, writer or commentator whose observations both challenge and amuse) as well as a Timeless Star to be revealed later.
The Dorian Awards winners (including GALECA’s pick for Timeless Star, a career achievement honor), will be announced Jan. 31 with a Los Angeles toast to the winners on Feb. 24.
