This Epic Video Compiles Every LGBT Joke to Ever Air on ‘The Simpsons’

Gayest Episode Ever, a brilliant podcast about gay episodes on classic sitcoms, recently released a chronological supercut of all the gay Simpsons jokes from the show’s first 31 seasons. Appropriate dubbed Smithers & Beyond: Every LGBT Joke on The Simpsons Ever, it’s over two hours long (it does cover 684 episodes) and is truly epic.
Check out the gay Simpsons jokes supercut here:
The video does come with a disclaimer that not all of these gay Simpsons jokes started out great, and that some of them have aged rather poorly — which is, honestly, to be expected considering the accepted cultural norms of the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s had forever been that gay people are funny, and that it is OK to laugh at gay people because they are gay. The video has very little commentary (“that’s for the podcast,” as the video says), and only when necessary for context.
Drew Mackie, co-host of Gayest Episode Ever, had this to say about the project:
In putting it together, I realized that The Simpsons is unique in that it has focused on the same core of characters — voiced by the same group of actors and in some cases produced by people who have worked on the show sometimes for decades. As a result, tracking how the show deals with LGBT characters and issues might work as a reflection of how Americans themselves have evolved.
The result is an impressive chronicle of the intersection of pop culture and queer representation.
This fits into the overarching theme of Gayest Episode Ever. The podcast’s two hosts, journalist Drew Mackie and screenwriter Glen Lakin, seek out and discuss the gay episodes of major sitcoms and classic television like M*A*S*H, I Love Lucy, even Scooby-Doo. Packed with trivia, jokes and insight, the podcast is well worth checking out (yeah, even for the straights).
Are you a lifelong Simpsons fan? Did you know just how many LGBT jokes The Simpsons made over its (current) 31 seasons?
