This All-Queer ‘Legally Blonde’ Table Read Celebrates Pride Month and the Film’s 20th Anniversary

NewFest, New York’s biggest presenter of LGBTQ+ movies and media, is presenting an all-queer Legally Blonde table read to mark the film’s 20th anniversary.

What a better way to kick off Pride Month than with a little ‘bend and snap’? On June 4, you can join screenwriter and Empire and MacGyver actress Alexandra Grey; actress, writer, and creator of web series Razor Tongue Rain Valdez; Nashville and Mrs. Fletcher actress Jen Richards; Matilda and Mrs. Doubtfire star Mara Wilson; and so many more for this completely queer Legally Blonde table read.

Alexandra Grey will be playing the role of Elle Woods, who irreversibly changed all of our lives with that perfect orange Mac laptop and Playboy Bunny costume in 2001.

Autostraddle writer Drew Gregory is directing and narrating.

While the event is free, a donation is suggested, and all proceeds from the Legally Blonde table read will go toward The NewFest Future Fund, which will support NewFest and its programs for LGBTQ+ youth, filmmaker resources and year-round screening programs. Viewers will be able to watch it on NewFest’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

You can RSVP and make your donation here.

This Legally Blonde table read is produced in collaboration with #MakeItGay live reads, “founded by Gaby Dunn during quarantine to reimagine typically white, straight, cis and male films into ones with diverse casts of various queer people.” In the past, the org has produced an all-black cast, all-queer table read of The Breakfast Club, a bisexual women-led Oceans 11 and a reading of Clue that was “even gayer than the original.”

NewFest Pride is a four-day celebration of the best of queer film, featuring virtual panels and special events in addition to six new feature films. Starting Friday, June 4 at midnight and through Monday, June 7 at midnight, films will be available. You can buy a four-day pass for $25, or an individual film pass for $12.

Will you be tuning into the all-queer Legally Blonde table read?
