Tony Awards 2018: ‘The Band’s Visit’ and ‘Angels In America’ Were the Big Winners

This post is also available in: Español

Tonight was the 72nd Annual Tony Awards. When the awards were announced, the big winners were expected to be Mean GirlsSpongeBob SquarePants and Angels in America. As it turned out, those predictions were mostly incorrect; Mean Girls and SpongeBob were shut out of the major categories, and the top Tony winners this year were The Band’s Visit, Angels in America and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Pts. I and II.

The night looked good for Angels in America at the beginning, when the first award went to Andrew Garfield as Prior Walter. Garfield dedicated his Tony to the LGBTQ community, and ended his speech with a reference to the Masterpiece Cakeshop decision: “Let’s just bake a cake for anyone who wants a cake to be baked!” Nathan Lane won the award for featured actor in a play, but that was the end of Angels‘ fortunes.

Aside from Robert DeNiro’s “Fuck Trump” outburst, it was a relatively low-key ceremony. One of the highlights was when John Tiffany, director of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, led the entire audience in a chorus of “Happy Birthday” to his boyfriend. (Though if you include the red carpet, our favorite was when Rachel Bloom of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend arrived with a t-shirt depicting, as she put it, “Stephen Sondheim smokin’ a big ol’ J.”
