A screenshot from Wreck-It Ralph 2 shows the Disney princesses hanging out together, with Mulan plopped down on a bean-bag chair in a varsity letter jacket, high tops and cuffed jeans. According to a 2017 meme, “cuffing [your] jeans and tucking in baggy shirts is bisexual culture.”
Of course, a varsity jacket and high tops are more associated with teen boys, so the ensemble may be a nod to Mulan’s cross-dressing. In Disney’s 1998 animated Mulan film, she pretended to be a male to take her father’s place in battle.
LGBTQ moviegoers were ticked off when it was announced Li Shang, Mulan’s love interest in the animated feature, would not appear in the upcoming live-action Mulan movie, due out in 2020. Many had perceived Li Shang as a bisexual “king,” because he was attracted to Mulan when she was disguised as a boy.
The image from Ralph Breaks the Internet comes just as Disney has come under fire for casting Jack Whitehall, a straight actor, as a gay character in the upcoming Jungle Cruise live-action movie. em>Wreck-It Ralph 2 , meanwhile, hits theaters on November 21.
This week the House of Mouse also released the first image from the live-action Mulan, depicting actress Liu Yifei as the legendary heroine.
“Mulan is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China,” the studio said. in a statement. “When the emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors.”
