Here we go again — last month, Cher broke the news that her next album would be an ABBA tribute. Now, we have our first peek — today, Cher tweeted a 40-second teaser of her Gimme Gimme Gimme cover, and we can’t wait to take a chance, take a chance, take a chan-chance on the full album.
After a Twitter countdown, Cher shared the beginning of her Gimme Gimme Gimme cover. Opening with a slightly distorted guitar riff, Cher turns her “Believe” vocoder back on to sing the hook on a bombastic modern-day club version of the disco hit.
When she was asked about the vocoder — and if there was more of it on the full album — she replied in her inimitable style, “Each Song is its own special Entity. Waterloo is Homage to Benny & Bjorn…Many Of Them Are my version of their dreams. If you Listen to Fernando you know it’s theirs. Benny & Mark Did track. Waterloo, Mamma Mia Are Just FUN. One Of Us Is . Chiquitita….Ahh. Name of Game”
We’re not sure what “” means in relation to her cover of “The Name of the Game,” but we can’t wait to hear.
Previously, Cher said that she was inspired to do a full album of ABBA tunes due to performing “Fernando” for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. On The Today Show last month, she told Kathie Lee Gifford, “I thought it would really be fun to do an album of ABBA songs. So I did.”
In addition to “Fernando,” Cher also sings “Super Trouper” for the film. Cher portrays Ruby Sheridan, the mother of Meryl Streep’s character.
2018 is a big year for Cher. In addition to Mamma Mia and the new ABBA tribute, she is also one of this year’s Kennedy Center Honorees. She’s also the subject of an upcoming Broadway musical, The Cher Show — which has already opened in Chicago.
