Have a Gay New Year: What’s Coming to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon in January 2018
It looks like it’ll be a gay 2018! If you’re planning on spending today nursing your hangover, perhaps you’ll enjoy some great movies to take your mind off the pain. And there are a number of gay and LGBTQ films coming for January streaming! You’re sure to find something — and here are a few of our recommendations.
Gay movies for January streaming
We said it was our favorite Christmas movie, but Batman Returns (Netflix, Jan. 1) is good for any winter month. That same day, Netflix is also getting the classic film Breakfast at Tiffany’s (though the less said about the regrettable Mickey Rooney role, the better). It makes a great double-feature with Capote (Hulu and Amazon, Jan. 1).
Musical fans will be happy to hear that Rent (Netflix, Jan. 2) is available. Then again, rent’s usually due at the first of the month. The gay conversion cult comedy But I’m a Cheerleader (Hulu and Amazon, Jan. 1) is available too. The controversial, yet critically acclaimed Dallas Buyers Club (Netflix, Jan. 16) is there too, so you can make your own decision.
Other great TV shows and movies to check out
One of the most exciting is The 2018 Rose Parade Hosted by Cord & Tish (Amazon, Jan. 1) — in it, Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon will be providing parade commentary, and it should be a hoot. We’re also looking forward to the Jack Black vehicle The Polka King (Netflix, Jan. 12). There’s also Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams (Amazon, Jan 12), a new anthology series from the sci-fi master.
Watch them before they’re gone
The good news is that there’s not a lot of great films leaving streaming this time. The biggest ones we can recommend checking out are Amélie, Philadelphia and Barbarella (all Hulu, Jan. 31). On Jan. 5, The Host leaves Netflix, but we can’t tell if that’s the awesome Korean horror film or the movie based on another awful book by Twilight scribe Stephanie Meyer; both are available on Netflix. Either way, there’s never a bad reason to watch the good movie named The Host.
