Gay Films and Returning TV Favorites: What’s Coming to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon in May 2018
As April winds its way out, and May takes over, we’ve got a batch of new stuff that’s coming to the three major streaming platforms. This month, we thought we’d take a special look at gay films — even though it’s too early for Pride, last year, there were very few LGBTQ movies, so we figured we should get while the getting was good. We’ve also got a look at some of our other favorites that are appearing, as well as some favorites you should watch before they leave. Get ready — here’s our May streaming guide!
Gay movies and shows for May Streaming
The biggest gay film to come to streaming is God’s Own Country (Netflix, May 1), the outstanding romance between two farmhands. If you’d like something a little lighter, Tig Notaro‘s new standup special Happy To Be Here (Netflix, May 22) should do the trick. And while only the second one is truly gay, the first 5 A Nightmare on Elm Street films and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (Hulu and Amazon, May 1) are all ready for your streaming delights.
If you can’t wait for the sequel premiering on July 20, watch the original Mamma Mia! (Netflix, May 16). Or just play your ABBA records really loud. Netflix is also bringing us the latest batch of Dear White People (Netflix, May 4) — here’s hoping Lionel gets a good storyline. And finally, though Coco (Netflix, May 29) itself wasn’t particularly queer, its creators were, and are currently working on a new LGBTQ-themed project.
Other great TV shows and movies to check out
If you haven’t seen the amazing Tonya Harding biopic-of-sorts I, Tonya (Hulu, May 31) — you’re in luck. (Seriously, this movie is great. We can’t recommend it enough.) Another experimental biopic, David Lynch‘s classic The Elephant Man (Amazon, May 1) will be available. And speaking of modern classics, you’ll be able to catch The Hurt Locker (Amazon, May 1) on the same day and platform. (The world’s strangest double-feature, perhaps?)
We can’t wait for A Little Help with Carol Burnett (Netflix, May 4), the newest show from the comedy legend. It’s a panel show where kids solve the problems of celebrity guests. The new show based on Peter Weir’s 1975 film, Picnic At Hanging Rock (Amazon, May 25), debuts this month — we’re interested to see how the series reframes the dreamlike mystery of the original.
And, speaking of shows, Netflix brings back two of our favorites this month: Bill Nye Saves the World, Season 3 (May 11) and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Season 4 (May 30).
Watch them before they’re gone
Oh no! You only have a few days left to rewatch To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (Netflix, May 1)! Better get on that. Luckily, everything else on our list leaves at the end of the month. You’ll have plenty of time to check out 1984, the goofy comedy Earth Girls Are Easy, the animated classic The Secret of N.I.M.H. and, finally, cringe along with Mariah Carey in Glitter (all Hulu, May 31).
